ABOUT ETAN MARK
“My company has more than $1.5B in assets under management and works with a half-dozen different attorneys every quarter. Etan is not just our lawyer – he is our company’s consigliere. His responsiveness, counsel and advocacy skills are true differentiators.”
.
I recently had an epiphany: all great attorneys find joy in their work. It sounds simple. There is a spark – call it energy, call it joie de vivre, call it ingenuity – that drives them.
Do you have it? And when I ask you whether you have it, I’m not asking you whether you have it when you are brunching with your loved ones, or at your kid’s school play, or four games into a competitive set of pickleball. I’m asking whether you have it when you practice law.
Some attorneys – I’d venture to say most – don’t have it. And that’s because they made the reasonable choice, consciously or not, that being great at their jobs is not one of their priorities. If professional fulfillment is not near the top of your list of priorities in life, then it slips to the bottom of the to-do pile. And because law is hard, it’s impossible to be great at it if you don’t prioritize it. And if you’re not excited about the prospect of becoming great at it – then you cannot find joy in it.
But if you do have that spark…
I recently bought a sign reads “If not now, when?” to hang on my wall – a daily reminder that the only thing that is real is this moment. A daily reminder that life is short, and it’s time to get busy living.
I cannot promise that my firm is going to be a panacea. Civil litigation is still civil litigation. Opposing counsel is still opposing counsel. Clients are still clients (and by that I mean the most amazing, perfect people around). But for those of you out there that enjoy solving clients’ problems during some of the most stressful points of their lives, that love to fight, love to win and love the law. Here’s what I can promise you we will feed that spark oxygen. You will become part of a values-driven team, building something lawsome.
If you are reading this from a BigLaw firm, odds are that you are going to take a pay cut from your base salary because your hourly rate is very high (as you know) and you are working like a dog. You wouldn’t be the first former BigLaw attorney we hired. If you have a real book of business, I’ll bet you lunch that you’ll make more money with us. I know – leaving a job is hard. And you’ve “invested so much time in your job” But,
If not now, when?
If you think you’re a great candidate, send me an email and let’s have lunch or coffee or a conversation.
